Teaching Harmony Using the Whole Body
What is harmony? According to the New Harvard Dictionary of Music, it is the relationship of tones as they sound simultaneously. A collection of pitches sounded simultaneously are termed a chord. Harmony is vibrational communication. We are harmonic beings because we have these vibrational forces within us. We feel chords and their relationships. We react emotionally, physically and spiritually to their progressions.
Each interval invokes an emotional response within us. This is why I believe harmony must be taught using the whole body, using the voice, the ear and movement.
Harmonic training is more that learning various chord progressions. It involves singing and playing harmonically by ear. It involves the skills of improvising over harmonic progressions, of transposing to other keys and harmonizing stylistically.
A harmonic text accompanies this course in addition to hands on experience.
